Meta's New AI Age Check Locked You Out of Instagram or Facebook? Here's What to Do

Meta has been rolling out an AI-based age-estimation tool across Instagram and Facebook through 2026, analyzing visual signals in photos and videos, things like estimated face and body proportions, rather than checking an ID, to guess whether an account belongs to someone under 18 or under 13. If the system flags your account, access gets restricted until you verify your real age, and for accounts that get flagged incorrectly, that restriction can feel like being locked out with no clear explanation.

What the tool actually does

Meta describes this as an age-estimation system, not facial recognition: it isn't trying to identify who you are, only to estimate an age range from visual cues. It runs in the background across photos, videos, and in some cases behavioral signals, and when it estimates an account is younger than the age on file, or younger than the platform's minimum, the account gets restricted pending verification.

Why accounts get flagged incorrectly

Age estimation from visual data is inherently approximate, and Meta itself has acknowledged the tool won't always get it right. Accounts most likely to be flagged in error include:

• Adults with smaller frames or younger-looking faces, where the visual estimate skews younger than the person's actual age.
• Accounts that mostly post content without a clear, recent photo of the account holder (business logos, product shots, group photos), leaving the system with limited or ambiguous visual data to estimate from.
• Newer accounts with little posting history, where there isn't enough visual data yet for a confident estimate.

What to do if you're locked out

1. Follow the in-app verification flow when prompted. Meta's stated process lets you confirm your age through an ID check or a live video selfie reviewed against the estimate, this is the fastest official path back to full access.
2. Don't create a second account to work around the restriction. It won't be treated as a fresh start, and it adds a second flagged account to resolve instead of one.
3. Keep the account's profile photo and recent posts consistent with a real, current picture of the account holder, where relevant, since that's part of what the system uses to re-evaluate the estimate.

For creator and business accounts, an age-verification lockout isn't just an inconvenience, it stops posting, ad management, and messaging until it's resolved, and verification review times aren't guaranteed.
